When the Baker Becomes the Bride: My Colourful Wedding Cake Parade

Seven colourful Lambeth wedding cakes lined up on a table at The Victoria in Sheffield

People often ask me what my own wedding cake looked like. The truth is… I couldn’t choose just one.

As a wedding cake designer, I spend every day bringing other couples’ visions to life. When it came to my own wedding — held at The Victoria in Sheffield — I wanted to create something that felt completely personal: something that reflected my love of colour, beautiful styling and, of course, cake.

So instead of having one large wedding cake, I made seven.

Every cake was a different colour. Every cake was a different flavour. Every cake represented one of my bridesmaids, with the colours perfectly matched to their dresses, while my own cake stayed beautifully white.

It became one of my favourite moments from the entire day.

My favourite style has always been Lambeth piping

If you’ve followed Flourish & Flotts for a while, you’ll already know I have a soft spot for Lambeth cakes. The intricate piping, delicate swags and vintage detailing feel timeless whilst still being incredibly modern when paired with bold colour.

Rather than creating seven identical cakes, I wanted each one to have its own personality. Every design featured classic Lambeth piping but with slightly different details and proportions, making each cake feel individual whilst still belonging together.

When they were all lined up side by side, they created the most colourful display I could have imagined.

Seven cakes. Seven colours. Seven flavours.

Every cake had its own personality:

  • 💛 Yellow — Luscious Lemon
  • 🩵 Teal — Raspberry & Pistachio
  • 💙 Blue — Sticky Toffee
  • 🧡 Orange — Chocolate Orange
  • 🩷 Pink — Raspberry & White Chocolate
  • 💜 Purple — Biscoff
  • 🤍 White — Cherry Bakewell

I wanted every guest to have a choice, almost like visiting a luxury dessert table — but with wedding cake taking centre stage.

The cake parade

Rather than quietly cutting the cake in the corner of the room, we turned dessert into part of the entertainment.

At the end of our wedding breakfast, each bridesmaid carried in the cake that matched her dress. One by one, the cakes made their way into the room before my white bridal cake made its entrance.

Watching everyone smile, point out their favourite colours and try to guess the flavours was one of those moments I’ll never forget.

The cakes weren’t simply decoration. They became part of the celebration.

Wedding cake served as dessert

I’ve always believed wedding cake deserves more than a few forgotten slices left on a table in the evening.

That’s why we chose to serve every cake as dessert during the wedding breakfast. Guests could choose the flavour that tempted them most, and every slice was enjoyed exactly as it was meant to be.

Seeing empty cake stands at the end of the night was probably the biggest compliment I could have received.

What my wedding taught me

Planning my own wedding reminded me exactly how my couples feel. Every little detail matters. Every decision feels important. And the cake isn’t just dessert — it’s part of the atmosphere, part of the styling and part of the memories people take home from the day.

That’s exactly how I approach every wedding cake I create for my couples. Whether it’s one beautifully elegant tiered cake or something completely unexpected like a colourful cake parade, my goal is always the same: to create something that feels completely, unapologetically you.

Thinking outside the traditional wedding cake

Your wedding cake doesn’t have to follow tradition. It can be colourful. It can tell a story. It can become part of the entertainment. It can even become dessert.

If you’re dreaming of something a little different, I’d love to help you create a wedding cake that’s every bit as unique as your day.
